Music Video Finale

Hey guys! So we are starting our music video project and this is the last project of the year! It makes me sad thinking that this is the last project that I will do in the Kapaa Middle School GT class, but its a fun project and a great way to end the year. My team for this project are my good friends Sophia, Jhoanna, and Ashley (who was on my last team). Their blogs are linked in the sidebar so go check them out! I'm excited to work with them for this project and Ashley is crazy so who knows what she'll do on camera! Anywho, we were struggling to pick a song. We knew we wanted to do something that related to food because it would be fun to film and we get to eat a bunch of food. So we were trying to think of love songs or something that could relate to food and show our deep passion for food. One evening, Sophia texts our group chat saying she has found the perfect song. According to her, her dad walked in the door dancing and singing to You Make My Dreams Come True, by Hall and Oates. She listened to the lyrics and thought it was perfect. Everyone knew of the song, even though we didn't know the lyrics, and we thought it was great. So that is how we chose our music video song- plus, her dad offered to help us with the choreography. So I guess we got that covered!

From the beginning, we knew we wanted to do something with food because first, we love food, and second, it would be really fun to film. Our storyline is about a bunch of girls that don't know each other that all depend on food to help them through things and just love to eat food. Jhoanna is scared of the dark, and eats food. Ashley gets stressed out and eats food when she's stressed (and any other time that she can). In the video, I had a nightmare and ate food when I woke up scared. Plus, I eat all the time. Finally, Sophia gets caught eating in the middle of the night, because, well, I think you can guess what I'm about to say. Because she loves to eat! At the end, the girls find a flyer inviting them to an event for people who love to eat food. They are meet up and become best food friends. That is our storyline. Hopefully it can play out the way it does in my mind but who knows. Also, we've got a little something else being filmed and planned at the same time but I can't say the details, since this is being written before its debut. But yeah, that's all!

I think this music video will be much better than last year's. Let's never bring that horrid thing up again haha. This project showcases our best work. It shows that we understand how these programs work, like Final Cut Pro and Photoshop. It shows that we understand how our equipment works. The extremely expensive cameras provided to us. Our music video might not be the best one, but I feel confident about how it has turned out. I feel it represents the personalities of all the team members. Overall, this is going to be a good video, and it will definitely show what we have learned in this class. I'm confident that this showcases our best work to (in my eyes) the highest degree.

Embedded VIMEO & 3 unique Behind The Scenes

Song By: Hall and Oates
Lyrics: What I want you've got
And it might be hard to handle

Like the flame that burns the candle

The candle feeds the flame, yeah, yeah
What I've got's full stock
Of thoughts and dreams that scatter
Then you pull them all together
And how I can't explain
Oh, yeah
Well, well you
You make my dreams come true
Well, well, well you
Oh, yeah
You make my dreams come true
(You make my dreams)
Come true

On a night when bad dreams become a screamer
When they're messin' with the dreamer
I can laugh it in the face
Twist and shout my way out
And wrap yourself around me
'Cos I ain't the way you found me
And I'll never be the same
Oh, yeah
Well, 'cos you
You make my dreams come true
Well, well, well you
You make my dreams come true
(You make my dreams)
Come true

Listen to this

Down on my daydream
Oh, that sleepwalk should be over by now I know

Movie Trailer

In GT, we are creating movie trailers. On my team is my friend Ashley, Steven, and Shanden (links to their blogs in the side bar- GO CHECK EM OUT). Our movie trailer is about a girl. She had a brother who passed away of cancer. When she is diagnosed with cancer, he mysteriously returns to help her through the tough path of cancer. During the time we were writing our storyboard and plan, I was preparing for big dance recital which meant I had rehearsals and practice almost everyday. They would normally run pretty late and I was pretty tired. But, I still contributed to the plan the best I could. I was assigned Scene 4- I was to write the film shots we would follow when filming that scene. I also contributed to the script and the entire idea of this plot!

This project was definitely interesting and stressful at times. Some of our biggest challenges were a: getting together to film, and b: the issue we had with out footage import. The issue
was that something happened while importing that messed everything up, possibly a bug or something else. But, it caused the footage to import incorrectly, so if we took the SD card out of the computer drive, it would say on the clips "NO CAMERA AVAILABLE" with a bright red background. Our teacher tired his hardest to fix it (which is really nice- thank you Mr. Sanderl) but the best he could do was reimport the files properly. Meaning we had to re-edit most of the video. But all went well, we got it done, and apparently it was good enough to place second. Some of our successes were re-editing the majority of the video and well, placing second place in the best overall video!

The critique went pretty well. Everyone had really amazing trailers and worked really hard on them. We got mostly orange and red which is really good. I'mm very proud of this project, since I wanted it to be one of the only not cringy projects I make. I'd say I did pretty good with that. For the overall best movie trailer, "Focused" and "Don't Say It" tied for first. We got second place (which I REALLY wasn't expecting), and "Grandpa's Goodbye" got third place. Congrats to everyone! I'm not sure if I agree with the results. I personally didn't think our video was that good but apparently other people did, which was really cool. This project taught me a couple things. First of all, working with people is difficult. They might not do their work or they might not do good work but you just got to keep working. Second, things can go a little off track, or even terribly wrong. But you can't go back and change the past, so just work with it. Fox it, do what you can, whatever you need to do. Just go with it, cause you can control everything that happens in life. Anyways, I think I'm done talking (good idea considering the huge block of text above this). See you soon guys, bye!

Metamorphosis Animation

The project we are starting now is an animation project. Metamorphosis animation to be specific. The goal of this project is to create a 1-2 minute movie with a team. The point of the metamorphosis part is for something to transform into another thing. We also have to include a custom soundtrack. In our animation, we used stop-motion and Photoshop. In our stop-motion, we used paper cutouts to make Gwynn and Albus and the other things. In Photoshop, we simply used a drawn out version of Gwynn and Albus and used that to animate, using the animation window in Photoshop.

My partners are my good friend Ella and Wailana (links are in side bar- go check out their blogs!). Our focus statement is Unicorn Transforms Attitude. Its about a very selfish unicorn that comes to realize the way he has been acting is wrong. He becomes a tree and changes his attitude to give back to the people in his life. In the first scene, you see the unicorn, whose name is Gwynn, stealing all of his herds food supply. The have very little to begin with, and even less with Gwynn stealing it all. The herd sees him taking the food and gets mad at him. Gwynn find an empty hill and begins to eat the stolen food. He meets Albus the magical rock. Albus explains to him that his attitude is very rude and he should rethink the way he acts. Gwynn soon realizes that Albus is right. Gwynn asks the magical rock to turn him into an apple tree so he can give back the food that he stole. His herd and many other herds in the future are supplied with apples from Gwynn and Gwynn feels good that he is giving back. That is the idea for our animation.

The critique went really well. There were lots of incredible videos and my team, I think, did pretty well. We weren’t the best of course but it wasn’t COMPLETELY cringey! We got a 3.7/4 for the clarity of our message, 3.7/4 for our characters, props, and backgrounds, a 3.6/4 for our originality and execution, and lastly, a 3.8/4 for our overall score. Not bad, huh? Anyways, I'm proud of the work we accomplished, especially with the difficulties of trying to plan a meeting and all being busy. We made a pretty funny animation, which we didn't even plan to do, but it turned out pretty good. It has a great message that will hopefully stay with someone because we used humor.

Geometric Portraits

Facial expressions are universal. The basic expression of joy or happiness is a smile. The basic expression of anger are furrowed eyebrows and a frown. Everybody, no matter where they are in the world, know this. I don't think it's something they are taught. When you are a baby, you already know to smile and frown. It is something we are just born with. Its in our nature.

First, you should create a photoshop document. Name it whatever you would like but I would advise to keep it organized. Then, in Poly 1, we used the line tool to outline triangles all throughout the face BUT ONLY HALF. Make sure you have your grid on- it will make it easier to create the triangles. Then, once one half of our face was completely outlined, we went back through with the polygonal lasso tool. Go through each triangle, outline it with the polygonal lasso tool, and then go up to FILTER, AVERAGE, and then select BLUR. Then continue the process. Use command F to copy the filter, and command D to deselect the triangle you outlined. Once you've completed one half, copy the layer, and drag across to mirror the left or right side. Make sure that they are symmetrical! And BAM! You are done. We kept the outline on one side of the image but you don't have to.
In Poly 2, we used the same tools. Starting with a photoshop document, but instead of outlining first, we dove right into the picture with the polygonal lasso tool. Again, make sure you have your grid on and make sure snap to grid is enabled *this is very important*. Next, instead of blurring the image, we selected the eyedropper tool by hitting I in the keyboard. Choose a color within the triangle you outlined and hit ALT + Delete to fill in the selected polygon. Deselect and continue. Make sure each triangle is visibly a different shade. Its okay if you repeat a shade but it cannot be next to the triangle with the same color. Complete the whole face and neck with that process. And you are done!

I personally liked Poly 2 better, even though I didn't quite finish. I found the process a lot easier. I also think Poly 2 is more realistic than Poly 1 because no ones face is perfectly symmetrical. As you can see, in Poly 2 there is more colors. Its a wider variety of colors, whereas in Poly 1 its all very similar looking. Not very interesting or eye-catching. However, it does look kinda cool with the white outline in Poly 1. That is the difference between the Poly 1 and the Poly 2 projects.

Verbal Landscapes

Nature impacts me in a few ways. I'm an inside person. I don't voluntarily go outside, but the rain makes me feel calm and sleepy. I love rainy days. Also, it can get very hot at school, making it hard to learn. Lastly, when I walk to my best friends Kacie's house, I get to see the sunset, making me calm and happy. I don't choose to go outside normally but nature still impacts me in very few ways.

Timelapses and slow-mos have a certain way to be recorded for them to look good. Timelapses must be recorded on a tripod because the slightest movement will ruin the effect when we get into the editing part. Anyways, timelapses should be a normal video filmed on a tripod. the longer the video, the cooler it will look. After you have the video taken, import it to a computer where you can edit it. Then open the editing software, and then speed it up. Most softwares have the option to speed things up. Then you have your timelapse! Slow-mos are the opposite. Slow-mos should be taken as a macro shot. Then, take a short clip of something very cool and usually fast event. Then, again, upload it to your editing software. Instead of speeding it up, simply slow it down. Then voila! You have your slow-mo and timelapse. Of course you could always use an app for that stuff or, like on the iPhone, the option on the camera makes a similar effect.

The hardest part of this project was finding the right place and time to take my timelapses. I do dance a lot after school and my parents work on the weekends. Also, my mom has been off island for a while so she hasn't been here. My topic is the ocean, so I don't have a variety of choices for the timelapses since the requirement is 2/3 sky and 1/3 land. All I can really do it different places and times of day, which isn't very interesting. My favorite part of this project is editing. I love editing in general. I don't really like this project because I don't like nature but at least I like editing.

After our video projects have been turned in, we always do a class critique. Our teacher plays each video and we chose a score for each person. I think this critique went well. I agree with the scores I got. I got a good amount of fours and a few threes. Also, we chose the overall best video. Unfortunately, I didn't win. I'm okay with that though. There were some videos that were significantly better than mine. Anyways, I'll see you guys next time. Bye!

Poetic Personal Statement

Poetry is art. Poetry is an easy way to express yourself and what’s on your mind. Poetry is like a person that listens to our ideas and feelings. It is like music, but much more personal and deep. Anyone can write a poem, but the true artist is the person that feels the poem. Poetry can be used for many things. It can be put into music, it can be put into art, and many other things. It is used to entertain- it is used to be yourself.

I had a hard time thinking of a poetic statement, but when I got into my photoshop document and started thinking about it all, it just flowed out. So here it is....

"Painting a picture as you dance
Time to watch some let’s play’s, if I am given the chance
Sit down and watch the boys and their angel friend
Panic! and FOB, I wish there was no end
Focus and strength get me through the day
I am an independent girl, and I will be no other way"

I love how this describes me and what I want to do. I don't want a lot in life. Just to enjoy some lets plays with Mark and Jack, or to go on a hunting trip with the boys, even if its through a phone.

I used rhyme more than I used rhythm. At the end of each stanza I used words that rhymed. Dance and chance; friend and end; day and way. But I low key have rhythm in my poetic statement. It is kind of hard to explain where there is rhythm but you can hear it when you read the poem. I feel pretty confident about my poem and I feel that it describes me very well. I also feel confident about the way I incorporated rhythm and rhyme.
